Week 1 Below {Stairwell Plans}

Hi and welcome! By now you know most of you know, but if you’re new to the blog let me just tell you, I love working on my home. I’m an Interior Designer by trade and my home has always been on the back burner, until now. My daughter’s nursery was the only space we designed floor to ceiling and ever since then, I’ve been on a mission to do the rest of the house. So far I’ve accomplished 2 pretty major rooms, the bathroom and the kitchen. I’ve also painted all the trim on my first floor white (it took forever but was totally worth it). So, for Calling It Home’s One Room Challenge I’ve decided to take on my stairwell.

Here’s a great stairwell reference in case you aren’t familiar with all the specific names of each stairwell component.

It is covered in pretty dirty and definitely old carpet. Underneath is hardwood and I have my fingers crossed that it is in good condition! Yes, I’ve lifted corners of the carpet to check but you never know, so I’m a bit nervous.

From the 1st floor you enter the stairwell from a cutout in the wall. It’s rather lackluster so I think removing the carpeting will help a lot (say hi to my little photo-bomber, she saw the camera and couldn’t resist)

Once you get to the midpoint of the stairwell things get more interesting.  The balusters will be getting a new coat of white paint, but I haven’t quite decided how I will be painting the handrail and newel post. (see inspirational pics below)

Right now it’s all painted brown and wearing off in places as you can see. (did you see my second and much fluffier photo-bomber? I think she’s really going to miss the carpet, but she doesn’t pay her own bills or scoop her own poo so she has no say)

The trim upstairs was never painted so it could use some freshening up. I also have plans for the draperies that hang in the stairwell. I’m thinking sheers layered under panels for more privacy and I’m bringing up the curtain rod for some extra oomph. I’d also love to add a new light fixture, maybe a lantern.

I created a new pinterest board (here) to house some of my inspiration pictures, others are in my Entries board (here). These are some of my faves for balustrade inspiration.

The newel posts are all painted a bit differently and I can’t quite decide which way is my favorite. Do I go all white or paint/stain the top of the newel post to match the railing? Which do you like best??

Thanks for visiting! Come back next week to see what kind of progress I’m making. I have a feeling the carpet will be gone. You can hop over to Calling it Home to see who else is linking up in the One Room Challenge here.
