I’m Dreaming of a White Kitchen
Hello everyone! I’d like to welcome you to my kitchen!
If you can imagine, it was actually worse than this when we bought the house. The now cream panneling was yellow and the now green walls were teal (yikes!) I told myself I would never ever paint these cabinets, that they were too ugly to waste time on. But after 5 years of looking at this oak mess I’ve had a change of heart. I’ve just completed painting the trim/windows/doors on the 1st floor of my home. And it made a HUGE difference in the feeling of my home. So much so that it has influenced me to paint my cabinets. I want to bring that clean, fresh feeling into my kitchen where I spend so much of my time. If you’re ever on pinterest (you know you are!) you see white kitchens pinned daily. And for good reason, they are beautiful! Lately I’ve been pinning more and more, I can’t seem to have enough white kitchens. I seriously need to make a “White Kitchen Obsession” board. Here are some of my favorites.
Back to painting, I’ve never painted oak cabaintes before. I can’t stand the grain showing through. I noticed on Little Green Notebook she used some sort of grain filler before she painted. And on Young House Love they just primed and painted. I’m torn on which direction I should go…Have any of you had any experience painting oak cabinets? If so Id’ love your input!

You are a brave woman! I’d love to paint ours soooo badly but I know it will take forever!
I’m dreading the amount of time my kitchen will be out of sorts. I think that’s why I put it off for so long!
I keep talking myself out of doing the same thing! I HATE my cabinets! Miss you, BTW
Totally miss you too! We should paint together, that way we can be each other’s motivator!!
I’m the BIGGEST fan of white kitchens. I’ve never painted oak cabinets but know there are so many products now that make it so easy. Can’t wait to follow along!!
Stay tuned! It should be fun!
Love white cabinets! we…well Nick,…painted ours in our old house before listing it. i was amazed at the difference. Nick said he things ours were oak, but cheap oak. lightly sanded, primed with Zinsser (SP??) primer then painted. We talked to a painter before we did it and he said it is best to spend money on a good paint. Said it smooths out easily and doesn’t show many brush strokes. We didn’t have too many cabinets, and i think it took nick a few days. Good Luck..can’t wait to see pics! let me know if you have questions and i’ll ask nick.
Awesome tips Jen! Thanks for sharing. I was thinking of using a mini foam roller as opposed to brushing it. Did Nick use one of those at all??
he just used a brush, in al his research he learned that a good brush makes all the difference. Guess it goes hand in hand with the good paint. I don’t see why one of the mini rollers wouldn’t work.
major props for tackling such a big project! can’t wait to see the final result.
Thank you!! It’s now or never right?!?
Love the idea of white cabinets….I fell like Jenny’s LGN strategy to cover them would work really well. I die whenever I see Bijou and Boheme’s kitchen…so good! right? Keep us posted.
Oh man, sorry I have no experience with this but I’m sure it will look awesome. I love all white too – so zen! Love the one with the campaign dresser thing in the island.
Thanks for you vote of confidence Stephanie! All that extra zen will come in handy when my pots are boiling over, timers going off and baby is screaming
I think we would like to do this too. It will be great to hear how it went. Our kitchen counter looks like yours and I have green walls too! By the way did you post pictures of your white trim and doors? I am excited to see how it all turned out!
Hi Jess, I’m showing pics of the trim this week! Stay tuned, it’s a fun one!
