THE WEEKENDER: A Family Affair
This weekend was very family oriented. On Saturday my husband, Norrie and I grabbed some coffee at our local coffee shop (actually Norrie didn’t have any coffee, she’s only 1 after all.) While I do not drink coffee, I do dream of it. No. 44 on my 101 in 1001 to do list is to Try an Espresso. I was feeling quite adventurous so I ordered a double shot espresso (I have no idea what that is btw) In my head I’d be some adorable Parisian sipping this murky beverage out of the most adorable petite cup. In reality it came in a paper cup, talk about a bubble burst.
I was completely let down for my first espresso ever! Regardless, I’m happy to report I drank ½ of it before it became room temperature and utterly disgusting. Seems like I must work on my heat tolerance of beverages.
My niece Briony (Big Sis’s daughter) turned 4 on Sunday. And to help out with the party I said I’d make the cake! I have secret, ok not so secret, dream of being on Ace of Cakes (here I am stalking their building.)
I have no formal baking training and have only frosted one other cake like this. So I doubt they will be calling anytime soon. Anyway! Briony requested a white cat cake. Here’s my 1st attempt at Briony’s cat cake. Sadly it did’t make it out of the pan in one piece. Lesson Learned: grease the pan more liberally!
For my 2nd attempt I forgot to add the eggs. I was all ready to pour the batter in the pan and when I lifted my mixing bowl; I saw 4 eggs on the counter just staring at me. GEEZ! I messed up another cake! Well instead of making a 3rd batter I just added the eggs. The end result: the cake tasted good, however it was very dense, kinda like pound cake.
Happy Birthday sweet girl!
And finally this weekend, I had to give back my father’s camera.
I have had it for the past 2 weeks just playing around and taking some project photos, like my white trim, yes it’s all done and I’m going to share very soon!!
How was your weekend? Did you go to the Presidential Inauguration? Sit on the sofa? Go sledding??!

I received last minute standing tickets (this only meant we got to be a mile back of the Capitol rather than 2 1/2 miles, which I was 2 years ago) from my friend who works in a Congressman’s office. I will admit, despite being cold and our metro system breaking down in DC (they didn’t expect this many people- really?) it is pretty awesome to see a President take the Oath of Office in person (with 1.1 million other people) and be part of history. Last time I said I wouldn’t do it again and then again this time, but never say never, right?
I meant 4 years ago . . . oops.
P.S. Love the Ace of Cakes picture
You are my hero Pam. I’m glad you couldn’t resist I think it’s amazing that you went. I’d love to feel the energy of all those folks coming together to support our President and Country! And that Charm City Cakes trip was the best!!
