The Kitchen Quest Has Begun

January 17, 2013

year of the kitchen

I’ve officially begun my kitchen quest! (#19 on my 101 in 1001 list) It feels good to have a plan and to have started building towards my goal. (You can see the original post here.) Since I’m only purchasing a few things a month I’m trying to buy what makes the most sense for my current needs.

The Kitchen Outfitters List

  1. Stand mixer
  2. Light metal bread pan January
  3. Measuring spoons (thin heads)
  4. Metal measuring cups
  5. Sieve
  6. Serving spoons
  7. Serving bowls
  8. Deep mixing bowl with rubber bottom
  9. Cooling rack
  10. Roasting pan
  11. Soup bowls January
  12. Flat cheese grater
  13. Mandolin
  14. Cookie cutters
  15. Carafe
  16. Kitchen scale
  17. Meat carving board

soup bowls

I’ve kicked off the list with #2 and #11. I started out with soup bowls because it’s winter and we eat more soup when it’s cold, makes sense right?! For the past, oh lets say…my entire life, i’ve eaten soup from cereal bowls. This usually leads to me microwaving the bowl  of soup so hot that I can’t touch the bowl. Ouch! Burnt fingers=pain in the behind. I also fill the bowl too high and it sloshes out over the sides. Yuck! Messy floor=pain in the behind.

THE VERDICT: So far I LOVE THEM! The handle is brilliant, I no longer get burnt and the bowl opening is designed to keep the soup in, so I’m not spilling it all over the floor. I purchased 4 soup bowls to start out. I’m not sure if it makes sense to have an entire set? What do you think??

bread pan

I also got a new bread pan. My current pan was a wedding registry mistake. I didn’t know the color of the pan made a difference so I just arbitrairly selected one, zapped it with the registry gun and moved on to the next mistake. I’ve been using this pan for nearly 6 years and I always burn ½ of my bread. So, it not only burns its contents, but it cooks unevenly as well, not to mention that no amount of butter will keep things from sticking to the pan. So it has been replaced!!

THE VERDICT: I made pumpkin bread this weekend in my new pan and it turned out perfectly! It didn’t burn, it cooked evenly and it came out of the pan effortlessly. I’m so glad about both of these additions to my kitchen.

I’m also still taking suggestions on your favorite kitchen item that I should add to the list!

don’t laugh, but my new favorite kitchen accessory is my ove-gloves! I cracked up when i saw my sis-in-law whip them out one day. She got me a pair for my birthday and they are life changing! must get the ones with the silicone non-slip grips. and they come in handy for other purposes…IE the heavy/awkward watersoftener that had to be carried to the basement and not handles…non slip gloves worked wonders.

This is a fun one on the to-do list! And if new pans inspire pumpkin bread baking then I’m all for it. I’ve had a rolling pin on my kitchen list for way too long. And I want a KitchenAid Mixer … someday!

I’ve always wanted one of those pretty marble rolling pins but I don’t know what on earth you use it for?!!
